J.H. Huscroft Ltd. is committed to conducting its forestry operations in an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable manner.
J.H. Huscroft Ltd. has developed a comprehensive Sustainable Forest Management Plan and a Fiber Sourcing Plan to address the Principles and Objectives of the 2022 Sustainable Forestry Initiative SFI ® Forest Management Standard and Fiber Sourcing Standard.
J.H. Huscroft Ltd. will demonstrate its commitment to the Principles and Objectives of sustainable forestry by:
- Maintaining certification to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) 2022 standard through the implementation of its Sustainable Forest Management Plan and annual auditing, practicing continual improvement, and making the results available to the public;
- Conducting forestry in a responsible manner using scientifically credible management practices in order to maintain and protect the ecological, environmental, economic and social benefits that our forests provide;
- Ensuring forest productivity and long term forest health, including practices to limit the spread of invasive species;
- Ensuring the protection of water resources, and conforming to forestry Best Management Practices to protect water;
- Ensuring that forests are managed to conserve biological diversity and protect wildlife habitat;
- Ensuring that the public can continue to enjoy the esthetic values and recreation opportunities that forests provide;
- Managing lands that are geologically or culturally important that takes into account their unique qualities;
- Ensuring timber sourced on the open market is harvested in a legal and sustainable manner which avoids harvesting from controversial sources and promotes sustainable forestry;
- Minimizing the environmental impacts of all forest operations, including measures that address climate change adaptation and mitigation through adoption and implementation of ‘climate smart forestry’;
- Ensuring that forests are managed proactively relative to fire risk so that they can continue to store carbon, provide wildlife habitat, be a source of clean air and water while protecting public safety and human health;
- Complying with all legal requirements and international agreements pertaining to forest management in British Columbia, and legal requirements relevant to social laws, employment standards and worker rights regarding health and safety;
- Monitoring, measuring, evaluating, reporting and reviewing SFM targets to promote continual improvement and innovation;
- Educating and promoting SFM principles and policies to employees, contractors and the public;
- Supporting scientific research used to improve SFM practices;
- Maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for employees and contractors that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Recognizing and Respecting Aboriginal title and rights, including treaty rights and recognizing that operations occur on the traditional territory of the Lower Kootenay Band.
- Providing opportunities for public and stakeholder participation in forest management.
